Though not particularly large in size, the city offers not only cultural attractions, vibrant nightlife and interesting boutiques with local products but also breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Austurv\u04e7llur Square<\/h4>\n<p>We began our walk on the grassy Austurv\u04e7llur Square, where, as legend has it, the first Viking settler dried his hay. Today, the building is open to the public and offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.althingi.is\/english\/information-and-enquiries\/visits-to-parliament-house-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>guided tours<\/strong><\/a>, where you can learn many interesting facts about Iceland\u2019s history and how its parliament operates.<\/p>\n<p>Address: Kirkjutorg, Reykjav\u00edk<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>D\u00f3mkirkjan Cathedral<\/h4>\n<p>Next to the parliament stands the white Lutheran D\u00f3mkirkjan Cathedral, the spiritual heart of the city. Interestingly, every session of the Icelandic parliament begins with a mass at D\u00f3mkirkjan, after which the members of parliament proceed together to the Parliament House. This symbolic act highlights the role of the church in Icelandic society.<\/p>\n<p>However, D\u00f3mkirkjan is not only a place of worship but also <a href=\"https:\/\/domkirkjan.is\/english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a centre<\/a> of cultural and social life. During your visit, you might come across interesting concerts or exhibitions.<\/p>\n<p>Address: Kirkjustr\u00e6ti, Reykjav\u00edk<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Town Hall<\/h4>\n<p>Behind the parliament, you\u2019ll find <strong>Lake Tj\u00f6rnin<\/strong>, on whose shore stands the modern <a href=\"https:\/\/reykjavik.is\/en\/reykjavik-city-hall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reykjav\u00edk City Hall<\/a> (Ra\u00f0h\u00fas Reykjav\u00edkur), built of glass and concrete. Its smooth lines, large glass surfaces and natural materials create a harmonious whole. From here, we also enjoyed a stunning view of the surrounding mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Inside, we discovered <strong>a tourist information centre<\/strong> and a large 3D map of Iceland, which not only details the coastline but also the glaciers and volcanoes. A visit to City Hall is a unique opportunity to explore modern Icelandic architecture while learning about the country\u2019s history and culture. You can also grab a coffee or a snack at the City Hall caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Address: Tjarnargata 11, Reykjav\u00edk<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nWe continued on to the main street L\u00e6kjargata, walking away from the lake. On the right, we saw the Menntask\u00f3linn \u00ed Reykjav\u00edk high school building, which also appears on the 500-kr\u00f3na banknote.<\/p>\n<p>As we walked further, we strolled through Austurstr\u00e6ti and Bankastr\u00e6ti, where you\u2019ll find many <strong>restaurants<\/strong> and <strong>shops<\/strong>. An interesting fact is that this street, whose name can be translated as \"The Path to the Hot Springs,\" was once a trail leading to the natural pools in the green <strong>district of Laugardalur<\/strong>, home to open-air thermal baths.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Hallgr\u00edmskirkja Church<\/h4>\n<p>The final part of our walk continued along <strong>Sk\u00f3lav\u00f6r\u00f0ust\u00edgur Street<\/strong>, where we found numerous galleries and jewellery boutiques. However, our attention was captured by the massive structure of Hallgr\u00edmskirkja, the largest church in Iceland. This stunning modern church, whose facade resembles volcanic basalt columns, also represents the Icelandic belief that even a small country can have big dreams.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the building, you\u2019ll find one of <strong>the largest pipe organs<\/strong> in Europe, regularly used for concerts. From the church tower, accessible by elevator, there\u2019s <strong>a breathtaking view<\/strong> of the entire city and surrounding landscape. Its colourful glass facade, inspired by the basalt formations of Iceland\u2019s nature, shimmers in the northern light and changes hues depending on the weather and time of day. The building not only hosts concerts and other cultural events but also features shops and restaurants offering a stunning view of Reykjav\u00edk, the surrounding mountains and the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Address: Austurbakka 2, Reykjav\u00edk<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nStanding on the waterfront is also the famous sculpture shaped like a Viking ship, called <strong>S\u00f3lfar 34<\/strong> (Sun Voyager). The statue was created in 1986 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Reykjav\u00edk being declared the capital and symbolizes Iceland\u2019s rich history.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>H\u00f6f\u00f0i House<\/h4>\n<p>We then walked all the way to H\u00f6f\u00f0i House, a witness to an event that changed the face of the world. In 1986, the famous summit between U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev took place here. It was here that the agreement to limit intermediate-range nuclear weapons was reached, considered one of the key moments on the path to <strong>ending the Cold War<\/strong>. Today, the house is open to the public, offering a glimpse into the place where history was made.<\/p>\n<p>Address: Borgart\u00fan 105, Reykjav\u00edk<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>How to save money?<\/h5>\n<p>In the capital, you can also take advantage of <a href=\"https:\/\/visitreykjavik.is\/reykjavik-city-card\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the Reykjav\u00edk City Card<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong>which offers free entry to a wide selection of museums and galleries, access to all swimming pools in the city and unlimited free bus travel within the capital area (excluding the Bus No. 55 to the airport). Additionally, the card provides discounts on various tours, services and in shops.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Tip for curious minds:<\/h5>\n<p>Not far from the capital, we visited the interactive museum of Iceland\u2019s volcanic processes at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.on.is\/en\/geothermal-exhibition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the Hellishei\u00f0i Power Plant<\/strong><\/a>. An excellent guide not only explained the workings of Iceland\u2019s geothermal forces beneath the Earth\u2019s surface and their utilization but also gave us the chance to explore multimedia installations and presentations on geothermal activity. The power plant offers several different tours, including a bonus trip around the Reykjanes Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>Address: B\u00e6jarh\u00e1ls 1, Reykjav\u00edk<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>What you muss not miss:<\/h5>\n<p>Among the most visited and famous attractions is undoubtedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluelagoon.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the geothermal spa Bl\u00e1a L\u00f3ni\u00f0<\/strong><\/a> \u2014<strong> The Blue Lagoon<\/strong>. This oasis enchanted us with its unique atmosphere, healing waters and stunning natural surroundings. The milky-blue water maintains a pleasant temperature of 37\u201339\u00b0C and is rich in minerals that have beneficial effects on the skin. On-site, you can enjoy a massage and other wellness treatments. The local restaurant serves Icelandic specialties with a view of the lagoon. There\u2019s also a hotel and a shop selling local cosmetic products enriched with minerals, mud and algae.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting that the lagoon itself is not a natural phenomenon but a byproduct of geothermal energy use.
